The terms Above Ground Level (AGL) and Above Aerodome Elevation (AAE) have two very different meanings but both are important altitudes to understand. Above Ground Level (AGL) is the altitude expressed in feet measured above the ground. Above Aerodome Elevation (AAE) denotes that an altitude is given above the nearest aerodrome or airport. This is usually identical to the altitude above ground level, but AAE is used to be precise whereas elevation AGL can change dramatically over small distances.
